4 List Building Mistakes To Avoid While Growing A Profitable Business

In my work as a Social Media Content Manager, I always run into one or two people who either aren’t actively building a list or they’ve gotten so busy with their business that list building is not a priority. The truth is that whether you have a virtual business or a brick and mortar operation, you must build your list AND do it properly.
It doesn’t matter what you market. It could be weight loss, yoga classes, meal planning services or a nail salon, the point is that you must build a list! Now at the same time, you may be building a list but who’s on it? Is it filled with your followers? People who want to connect with you. If not, there may be a disconnect and you may be making some of these mistakes. If you are, don’t feel bad because I think we’ve all been there.
List Building Mistake #1- Lack of consistency
Consistency is the bridge between your goals and your results. If one of your goals is to build a big responsive list then you must be consistently proactive. Do something every single day to attract people to your site. This is where publishing a newsletter AND blogging come together to help build a strong relationship with your readers. Grab your calendar and physically write your publication schedule. Post it where you can see it. Set reminders in your smartphone and stick with it.
The key is to be consistent with your efforts. Now, this is where you need to be honest with yourself. Can you do it all? Perhaps, but you can do it better with assistance. Being able to work with your virtual assistance can help you become consistent with your blog posting, newsletter publication and therefore, your list building efforts.
List Building Mistake #2- Not tracking anything
This is an EPIC mistake that too many business owners are making! For example, you create a new ad campaign utilizing social media, a few guest blogging opportunities and media buys. Then you notice all this traffic coming to your site and people opting into your list. Woohoo! That was awesome. It was like a shot of adrenaline and you want to repeat it again but you have NO CLUE as to exactly what worked in that campaign and what needed to be tweaked or cut all together. You’ve got to track everything and there are great tools to help you do that.
List Building Mistake #3- Leaving the personal out of the equation
I see this every day and perhaps you have as well. It’s when you discover that you’re actually multilingual. Not really, but what you’re doing is throwing up a wall to keep your personal life totally separate from your business persona. You’re living a compartmentalized life and there is a great disconnect with your message.
Instead of trying to keep the two apart, merge them together. Now I don’t mean that you need to get all touchy feely, unless that’s how you naturally are BUT people want to see all of you. Start telling people what you had for breakfast or how you’re spending your weekend. You’d be surprised as to how people will respond and in a very good way!
List Building Mistake #4- Not continuing to build a list
This should seem pretty obvious yet you may be surprised how many people get to a certain number and then coast. They think the work is done and that is so far from the truth. If you remember list building mistake #1, then it should prevent you from making list building mistake #5…seriously! Here’s WHY you need to continue building your list. While people are opting into your list, there will be people unsubscribing. Don’t get caught up in who’s leaving, that’s not your concern unless there is a mass exodus. You’re focus should be on sharing great content to your niche market and building a relationship with them.
These are just a few of the mistakes that you want to absolutely avoid when building your own list. This is by no means a exhausted list but it’s a great start.
