Dodging The Depression Bullet: How To Maintain Your Sunny Disposition in Network Marketing
By Golda Smith
I learned this after many dark and utterly depressing days…and nights for that matter. Anyone new to the network marketing industry should be inoculated against the depression bullet, if not it is liable to take you out of the business before you even get started. I see it happen every day! Someone introduces you to a product, you use it, you love it and soon enough you decide to sell it yourself. How difficult can it be?
Warning: Be careful of the words you speak!
Whether you are brand new or a veteran in the industry the truth is that we either will or have experienced this. Not to many people train you on the fact that not only will lots of people say NO, but that you will question your own abilities. If left unchecked you may become convinced that you just don’t have what it takes to make a living that will allow you to support yourself and your family. Bullshitake!
What leads the Network Marketing Depression?
Internal dialogue– Most companies will train you until the cows come home, but are you being trained on what really pays? Who cares about product ingredients and benefits if the tape recorder in your head is playing…
“You’ve failed at the last three companies you’ve been with, what makes this one different?”

“I haven’t made any money, why the heck would anyone listen to me?”

“How can I sell a weight loss product when I’m over weight? What a joke!”
If these are the words playing in your head, how do you think it will affect the way you interact with others? Not positively I can tell you that much. Work harder on yourself than anyone else and you will be very well paid.
Rejection– EVERYONE has faced rejection, EVEN the big money earners that you want to emulate. The very people that you were absolutely positively sure would be ready to join you in business couldn’t care less. As a matter of fact, they give you all the classic objections because they just don’t have the guts to say "I'm not interested and will never buy from you!" What do you do? You take it personally. You think the product doesn’t work. You try to identify some flaw that you obviously didn’t see up until this very moment! Slowly but surely if this is left unchecked, you begin to check out, maybe even looking for the “new” opportunity that will lead you to the life of your dreams.
How To Maintain Your Sunny Disposition
Personal development– Take a look at those people you associate with. You’ve heard time and time again that you will be like the five people you spend the time with. That reason alone is why it is imperative that you attend as many personal development seminars as you can. You’ll be surrounded by likeminded individuals, moving in the same direction who understands where you are and where you want to go.
When you’re down go up!-This is a classic saying in network marketing and it simply means that when you are having those moments of depression, NEVER talk to your newer team mates. They’re excited and you don’t want to bust their bubble. Instead, share those feelings with people in your business more experienced than you because they can handle it. They’ve most likely already been there and won’t be scared by what you are sharing.
Be enthusiastic– You can be totally ignorant about the products you are offering but if you are enthusiastic, nine times out of ten, you can close the deal. People buy you and your enthusiasm before they even look at your product or your video or get on your call. Your success is network marketing is based more on your attitude than your ability!
Use Affirmations– I love affirmations. These aren’t just mindless words that you say to yourself because you heard they work. There is POWER in words and there’s energy that’s emitted in the universe when you speak with confidence and power.
“My customers love the service they receive from me.”

“I’m a powerful and strong woman, attracting those who will happily pay for my products.”

“I am a successful business builder, providing a valuable service to my clients.”

“I am attracting all the business I need to provide an income to support my family.”
What are your affirmations? Start with five and write them down, NOW! Keep them with you all day and say them aloud throughout your day. Say them until YOU believe them and KNOW that they are true.
Visualization– You may be homeless and sleeping on someone’s sofa like I was for a few months but don’t let that stop you from seeing what’s possible for your life. A day didn’t go by where I didn’t journal and see exactly what I wanted for my future and you have the ability to do the same. Do not allow your present circumstances to dictate your future.
Speak with anyone who had made it to the top of the network marketing food chain and you will discover that they have this one thing in common…they didn’t quit! Quitters never win. Take consistent, right daily action every day. Share your story, build your list. Market and promote, get training. Rinse and repeat. Most importantly, mange your internal dialogue by working on yourself…forever!

Nice article, Golda! I can't get network marketing out of my blood. I believe it's the greatest marketing plan on the planet. I have experienced almost everything you mention here, but I ain't gonna quit.

Thank you Phil. Network marketing IS the business model being used by billionaires like Warren Buffet and Donald Trump. So anyone who says IT doesn’t work, is deluding themselves 🙂 Keep pushing forward Phil, don’t quit!

Hi Golda,

Those are amazing points you shared. I'm most interested in internal dialogue. We really need to fight off those negative thoughts playing in our minds. They don't do any good. Sometimes, we are not aware that they're not real and that it is just us who think it that way. So we really have to practice fighting them and start to stuff in some positive thoughts. 🙂

Hi Calli. Internal dialogue is something that we must always work on. It’s influenced by what we allow into our minds, into our ears. You constantly have to monitor that and reprogram your mind for success…however you define that. In my opinion, don’t fight it instead acknowledge it and then place the energy into changing your thoughts. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Golda,
"You can be totally ignorant about the products you are offering but if you are enthusiastic, nine times out of ten, you can close the deal. "
This line got me thru some tough months in the beginning. Actually, each one of your tips helped me. Spot on post here.
Work on your mindset as much as anything else, because a chief cause of failure in network marketing is simple lack of persistence. People don't believe they can do it, or don't want it badly enough, and the remedies for these mental issues is devoting yourself fully to personal development.
Thanks for sharing!

You are so right Ryan. Persistence at working your business and in getting the skills to do the job better is what is lacking in our industry.
