How To Be Brilliant on Twitter
By Golda Smith
I’m still amazed at the number of people who are just catching onto the usefulness of twitter to engage clients and fuel their business profits. I’m equally amazed by the number of people who are on twitter yet totally miss the mark when it comes to harnessing the full power of this FREE marketing tool.
I was inspired to write this article after spending some time managing an account for a client. Following my clients instructions of building his audience, I quickly got to work. I found his ideal market and began to engage, interact and grow his following. In the process, what I discovered just tickled me to no end.
Why Some Social Media “Experts” SUCK
I am stunned, absolutely stunned how many people called themselves Social Media Managers or experts and they aren’t showing up regularly on twitter and by regularly, I mean at least 4 to 6 times a day.
Hmm, what’s wrong with that picture? Let’s get over the fact that the account was created 4 months ago. What really got my attention was the fact that they tweet 0.2 times per day and in the 4 months the account has been active, they’ve tweeted a whooping 25 times. Is this someone you’d hire to manage your online business? Would you go to this person for coaching? I hope not and YES I quickly un-followed them!

They Un-followed, Me- Who Cares?
It makes me chuckle when someone tweets about people un-following them. Worse is when they actually list the people who un-followed them…talk about being LAME. That instantly lets me know they’ve got way too much time on their hands and aren’t the type of people I want to work with.
How to Be Brilliant on Twitter
Take off the Mask
As with most all social media platforms, it starts with your face. Let’s see who you are. No hiding behind logos and pets. People connect with and do business with people.

Use Your Real Estate
Next step, take the time to complete your bio. Let me know who you are, what you do and why I would want to follow you. Even Lady Gaga, who has THE MOST twitter followers on the planet, has a bio.
She can get away with a two word bio, the average person on twitter…no. Your bio is valuable real estate, use it and be sure to use one or two keywords so that your ideal clients can find you.
Engage People
Ask questions. People love to show you how brilliant they are. However, be genuinely interested in what they are saying because people can smell a phony a mile away. If you like what they’re saying, be sure to re tweet it. If you’re still trying to get the hang of twitter I suggest joining a twitter chat. They are brilliant! You get to meet and connect with like minded individuals.
Don’t say too much
What I really love about twitter is that it forces you to become a better communicator. How? Well, you only have 140 characters to get your point across. Not 140 words…or 140 letters…but 140 characters. If you tend to be long winded, you will be forced to get it said and be understood in a concise manner. With the proper use of a hashtag and brushing up on your vocabulary, you can create some really compelling tweets that engage people and get re tweeted.
Have fun, be real and show people that you care and you'll be just fine! Are you on twitter? Send me a tweet!
