List Building Mistakes To AVOID For Network Marketing Success

by golda on March 24, 2011

In a previous post I talked about the importance of building a list and how easy it is to that. After reading that, you understand and should be convinced that if you want to create raving fans that will help you build a profitable home based business then you need to build a list and develop an intimate relationship with that list. On the flip side you absolutely need to be aware of some of the things that can go wrong when running your list building campaign. In this post I want to go over some list building mistakes that you want to avoid like the plague!

In today’s competitive marketplace you have to be on your game…

List Building Mistake #1
Not interacting with your list regularly. I want you to remember this…consistency outperforms the competition! We live in a society that has the attention span of an ant. They want what they want right now and if not then you are a forgotten memory. You have to send them a piece of correspondence at a minimum of 3-4 times a week. You want to command their attention and what better way accomplish that than by showing up in their inbox frequently.

List Building Mistake #2
Not utilizing the Thank You page. This is one of the few times when you have your subscribers complete attention so don’t blow it. You absolutely want to take advantage of the fact that you can redirect your new opt in to a customized thank you page, NOT the default page. On this page you not only say thank you but you can remind them to check their email and confirm their request. You can also let them know what your blog or newsletter is about and how often they can expect to hear from you. I learned that from one of my mentors.

List Building Mistake #3
Not tracking or testing your campaigns. This is an EPIC mistake that you, the savvy Mompreneur, want to avoid. The reason why you are writing and sending emails is to connect with people who will open and read your content AND then convert those people into paying customers. Aweber has analytics built in that will tell you how many emails where opened, what links where clicked and how many times your messages were read. If you send 50 emails and only 3 were opened, it could be a strong indication that your subject line totally bombed. Do you think this is important to know? Absolutely! The only way to do this is to track and test your work.

List Building Mistake #4
Using the wrong Autoresponder. This is the heart of the whole operation and using the wrong one can be deadly for your bank account. The autoresponder is where your names and email addresses are gathered and stored. There are a number of autoresponder resources available, some a free and some charge a small fee. Some charge you based on the size of your list. I have only used Aweber and love their customer service.

List Building Mistake #5
Not continuing to build a list. Duh! Let’s face it, after a while if you’ve been marketing correctly then everyone on your list will be exposed to your products. Then you’ll have people who will unsubscribe and you can’t do anything about that. The activities that you did to build your list are what you need to do to continue to attract new people to your list.  You want to keep your list fresh and responsive and the way to do this is to consistently attract and add new people to your list.

These are just a few of the mistakes that you want to absolutely avoid when building your own list. This is by no means a exhausted list but it’s a great start. I’d love to know what are some of the mistakes that you’ve made and some challenges that you are currently having with regards to building your list and if you found some value then do share with your friends in internet land. Until next time….

Nice work Golda,
These points seem obvious but are easily forgotten (I have to put my hand up as guilty on a couple of counts). Covering all these bases will make a massive difference to your success with list building and conversions which of course is exactly what we're aiming for in this business!
Thanks for putting together this clear and significant post…

Hi Golda,
Excellent tips here.
I was guilty of 1 for a while, afraid of burning out my list. Of course, I had little confidence at the time because sending a value-packed message more than once a week was burning out my list….lol.
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ryan. I am sure that you have gotten past that confidence hurdle and are crushing it. I used to think the same way as well and one of my mentors set me straight. If it works for her then surely she knows what she’s talking about.

Great post, Golda! These are some very key things to remember, and I think that you are so right about the importance of doing right by your list in order to achieve success. I especially agreed with the importance of making sure to follow up with people. I've had e-mails from mailing lists about six or seven months after the last contact, and I even forgot that I was still subscribed. Not the kind of relationship you want to build at all.

Hi Steve,

You have proven a very good point, you must have good followup if you want to build a solid relationship with the people on your list. To not receive any contact after several months is unprofessional and screams “I don’t care about you”.
