Top 3 Benefits of Participating in Twitter Chats
By Golda Smith
Were you the kind of kid that always got into trouble for talking too much in school? If so, then twitter chats would be perfect for you. Here, you’re encourage to speak up…well, tweet up (that was funny right?)
A twitter chat is a conversation that takes place with a group of people on twitter typically around a particular topic. From all the ones I’ve participated in, there’s a moderator who tweets specific questions to guide everyone alone. The average chat lasts about 60 minutes. Here’s one big key, there is a hashtag that people use with every post so that people can find the conversation and follow along.
Now, there are a number of reasons why you should set aside an hour or two every week to take part in a twitter chat and I’m about to share with you WHY!
What’s in it for me? This is a great question especially if you really don’t get what the hoophala is about twitter. 140 characters, hashtags, incomplete sentences…it’s enough to make my English teacher cringe but even slang has its benefits.
#Twitterchat benefit #1- FREE market research
I often hear people ask this question “what should I post on my facebook page?” or “what should I blog about?” Do you know how much information you can gather from a twitter chat? No matter what you market…there’s a twitter chat going on somewhere with your ideal clients and it’s your job to find it and listen to what they’re asking and saying.
#Twitterchat benefit #2- Increase your following
Some people are so addicted to increasing their twitter followers that they will even buy them. YUCK, how tacky and cheap. I think it’s much better to grow organically and this is where participating in a twitter chat with your ideal clients help. As you begin to interact with participant by answering questions and re-tweeting comments, people will naturally begin to follow you. Maybe not all at once…okay definitely not all at once BUT they will and if you show up consistently they’ll definitely notice.
#Twitterchat benefit #3- Increases your visibility
Social media is a voyeur’s playground! Seriously, you never know who is following along in a chat or who is will stumble upon that #twitterchat hashtag and read all the questions and comments. Here’s a BIG warning: DO NOT comment on topics you know nothing about! That would be stupid. If you are responding with thoughtful and helpful content, people will notice and secretly begin to watch you. They’ll follow you on twitter. Check you out on facebook, perhaps even ‘like’ your page. If you have a blog, they’ll find it…all from a few a little bit of chit chat.
So there you have it. Now I realize that some of you are still wrapping your head around consistently posting on twitter, or knowing what to say and when to say it. You’re not alone. It’s more than something else to do; it’s something you’ll want to do. I’ll let you in on a little secret. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone but I’ve been the voice for some of my clients on twitter. They either don’t have the time or have no idea when to use a hashtag that it just frustrates them BUT they understand the value of participating. A twitter chat is so relaxed and the fact that you can build great relationships with people who are genuinely interested in what you have to say, which is what social media is about, is the ultimate benefit.
Do you have a favorite chat? If so please share, perhaps we’ll run into each other on the stream. Happy tweeting!
