Will the Real You Please Stand Up?!
By Golda Smith

There are so many “me too” marketers online, it’s frustrating, boring and sometimes downright painful to watch. Your blog, your e-newsletter is THE place for you to be real. Sadly, way to many people are scared of being themselves.

Heaven forbid they should appear a little less than perfectly polished. “What if I make a mistake?” Newsflash…we all make mistakes. It’s not when we make a mistake that determines how  or if people will connect with us. It’s how we react to those mistakes that let’s our readers get to know the “real” us.

One of the main things that prevent people from being themselves…in my opinion is that they don’t think they’re interesting. “Who wants to hear what I have to say?”

Never think that what you have to say isn’t important. That is a serious mindset issue.

So how can you add more personality to your e-newsletter? Do you have pets? You’d be surprised to know that people LOVE hearing about pets. Insert a photo of your precious kitty or puppy. Tell a funny story or give them their own regular column.

Do you have children? Are children important to your niche? If so, then talk about yours. Not all the time but a few mentions every now and then will be like a breath of fresh air…everyone loves talking about THEIR child!

Here’s a huge tip…talk about something that you have personally overcome. Many people will shy away from this but the true connectors won’t. What issues have you overcome? Infidelity in your marriage? Major weight loss? Addiction? Adoption gone wrong? Infertility problems? Baby daddy drama? Anything that resonates with your audience and allows them to see YOU as a real, trustworthy and likeable person.

I can already hear some of you saying “I haven’t overcome any struggles”. That’s all right.

What are your hobbies? I like…no…LOVE kickboxing and cooking and share it in social media all the time and people respond. So answer the question. What are your favorite hobbies? Are you athletic, do you play a musical instrument, frequent traveler, have a fabulous green thumb? Get creative! Talk about your volunteer work or your collection of (you fill in the blank).

Whatever it is please do share and if you have photos, that’s even better. Most people are closet voyeurs, we want to watch. Remember the purpose of your e-newsletter? The main purpose is to connect. It’s not to educate, sell or promote your next big thing.

Connection is the key to growth! How are you connecting and who are you connected to? Each and every day, make genuine connections and one of the best ways that I know how is to let them see the real you. My business coach often snorts on our coaching calls. Some people would be mortified. Not me, it tickles me and makes me love her even more because it’s confirmation that she is real and real it totally awesome!

Your turn. Share your fabulous connectivity tips!

That is true Golda! I think it doesn't have to be all marketing, it can also involve your hobbies. It's a lot easier to talk to people if you have the same interest. I think it's great that you involve yourself into other things as well, according to your own interests.

Very well said. Reading about the same things or topics makes for boring reading; it is essential to post things that will break the monotony and will spark the readers' interest.

As for me, then my hobby is yoga. I like practicing it greatly. It helps me to relax and to forget about everything
