Using WordPress To Build Your Network Marketing Business
By Golda Smith

Like many mom’s, I got started in my network marketing business because of the financial opportunities and all that it would allow me to accomplish. However, the realities of my life as a single mother lead me to find another way to build my business. Something that didn’t depend on me meeting face to face with people and definitely not attending the famous Thursday evening opportunity meetings where I’d have to lockdown reliable and affordable childcare in order to attend.

My sights then turned to the internet. I discovered the online world of internet marketing; I was hooked and wanted in! Still though, I was unsure how to bring my network marketing business online without having to depend on a company replicated website. I can tell you that I spent many months purchasing many courses that promised to deliver “THE” secret, many of which over promised and under delivered.

After identify a mentor that I trusted and began to delve into her information, one thing was obvious and that was the need to have a blog. But wait, not just any blog…a wordpress blog.

Why A Blog and Why WordPress?

There are three reasons why you must have a blog if you’re building your network marketing business.

Branding- Regardless of what industry you’re in, you can brand yourself to be whoever you want. This is what trips up many would be excellent bloggers. They think they have to fit into some mold and that is so far from the case. People want to see the real you. Go check out Heather Stephens of the Clever Marketer or Heather Armstrong creator of Dooce if you want to see branding in action.

You’re the expert- Many people define an expert as someone who has published content such as a book or some type of information product. A blog allows you to position yourself as an expert in your field because you are publishing fresh content on a consistent basis.

Credibility- Lastly, a blog gives you credibility. The more relevant content that you produce, the more people will view
you as the source of reliable, and unbiased information in your field.

Top Reasons for Using WordPress

1.   Google LOVES wordpress! This alone is reason enough to have a wordpress site because it will enable your blog to be easily found in the search engines.
2.   A self hosted wordpress site allows you to control your content.
3.   WordPress is so ridiculously simple to install my eight year old can do it. Seriously, non techies can do this in their sleep.
4.   Whatever function you want your wordpress site to perform, chances are there’s a plugin that can get the job done and extend the functionality of your site.
5.   You can easily make updates to your site without some pricey webmaster.
6.   You’ll save tons of money because you won’t need a programmer to operate your site.
7.   You can easily create and add and opt in form to capture the contact information of all who visit your site…and they will belong to you not your network marketing company!

Why WordPress and NOT Your Company Replicated Website

The bottom line is that you want to control and own your list. In most network marketing companies, when someone opts into your list via your network marketing companies replicated website technically that lead belongs to the company NOT you. Let’s say that you’re really good at generating leads and you build your list to 5000. Suddenly life happens, as it usually does. One thing leads to another and you decide to move onto another company. Guess what? You can’t transport that list of 5000 with you. Unfortunately, you’ll be starting over with your list building efforts. If however, you are branding yourself via your own self hosted wordpress site then it won’t matter if you change companies because your list belongs to you. The one thing that’s been drilled in my head and that I want you to understand is this….the money is in your list.

The other reason why you want to use wordpress and not your network marketing company replicated website goes back to branding. Often time’s people will mention to me that they want to start a blog and market online however, they have no idea what to blog about. That’s the beauty of blogging. You have the ability to write about whatever you want to and then weave your network marketing business into that.

Want to see what I mean? Visit Angela Brook’s blog. She’s a nurse in a state funded mental hospital and frequently shares what’s happening in the corridors. Man, if walls could talk! She’s also sharing her network marketing opportunity with her readers who are predominately other nurses. This is an excellent example of how you can use your life and talk about what really matters to you while sharing your network marketing opportunity with others.

Now you know why I’m a big supporter of using wordpress to build your network marketing business. However, I understand that some people will still have reservations about setting it up themselves and to that I say outsource. For a small investment, you can have your wordpress site up and running in less than 59 minutes.

Hi Golda,
I prefer using wordpress, too. Aside from the fact that Google loves wordpress, the plugins also make things a lot easier for us. And you're right, you won't need to pay a programmer to setup anything you want for your blog. :D

I favor utilizing wp, also. Aside from the proven fact that Search engines love wordpress, the particular plugins also make points much easier for us.

There is no use of getting these things done till the time you have a huge amount of traffic..!!

I have to disagree with your statement Sid. It’s like saying “I’ll take my business seriously once I have some clients“. You work with excellence the moment you decide to become a business owner. If blogging is part of your marketing strategy to build your network marketing business then do so with consistent publishing regardless of how much traffic you have. If you’re doing it correctly then the people will come to your site. Thanks for commenting.

I've seen you reference a mentor repeatedly, and obviously this has worked for you? Who is she? :)

Hi Kelli-
I absolutely believe in mentoring but only if you are coachable. Currently I’m being mentored by Sandi Krakowski. Also, Dani Johnson. Both of these women are the real deal!
